Roskomnadzor has completed the procedure for adding the American streaming platform Netflix to the register of audiovisual services, the department told Izvestia on Tuesday, December 28.
“Entertaining Online Service LLC has ensured compliance with the requirements of the current legislation of the Russian Federation, necessary for its inclusion in the register of audiovisual services as the owner of the Netflix audiovisual service in Russia. Roskomnadzor has entered the Internet service into the ABC register, ”the ministry said in a commentary.
The Entertainment Online Service company, which operates Netflix in Russia, is part of the National Media Group. NMG Izvestia confirmed the entry of the resource into the register.
“Entertainment Online Service LLC ensured compliance with the requirements of the current legislation of the Russian Federation, necessary for its inclusion in the register of audiovisual services as the owner of the Netflix audiovisual service in Russia,” the NMG press service said.
Netflix’s inclusion in the register is a positive moment, says Aleksey Byrdin, CEO of the Internet Video Association. According to him, this should ensure the equality of foreign and domestic services before the legislation of the Russian Federation and put all players on the Russian market in more equal conditions.
Netflix’s “landing” could serve as a good example for other large foreign Internet companies. I hope that after Netflix and other foreign online cinemas operating in Russia will be included in the register, ”Byrdin emphasized.
The register of audiovisual services was created by Roskomnadzor at the end of 2020 in order to monitor prohibited content in online cinemas available on the territory of the Russian Federation. It includes resources with a daily audience of more than 100 thousand users. Today the register includes more than 20 platforms, including More.tv, KION, Kinopoisk and others. Netflix is the first foreign platform to be included in this list.
