Fusion reactor in China warmed up five times stronger than the Sun

Researchers have recorded a new record in the operation of a Chinese thermonuclear reactor – it reached a temperature of 70 million degrees Celsius and worked with this heating for about 17 minutes. Writes about this on Monday, January 3, the Xinhua news agency.

Thus, the plasma in the installation was heated five times stronger than the Sun.

“In the first half of 2021, we maintained a plasma with an electron temperature of 120 million degrees Celsius for 101 seconds. This time we used a long pulse of heat. The parameter of the plasma with the electron temperature has reached about 70 million degrees Celsius, “said the head of experimental operation of the device, Gong Xianzu.

According to him, the achieved result can become “the foundation for the construction of a stable thermonuclear engineering reactor in the future.”

In this mode, the Experimental Advanced Superconducting Tokamak (EAST), known as the “artificial sun”, operated for the longest period of time for such a device – 1056 seconds. In this case, the injected energy reached 1.73 GJ.

According to the agency, the goal of the project is to generate almost limitless clean energy that mimics the natural reactions that take place inside the stars. At the same time, without the cost of fossil fuels and the deposition of hazardous waste.

On September 25, former UN Under-Secretary-General for Economic and Social Affairs Sha Zukang called on Beijing to reconsider its policy towards the United States and abandon its policy of non-use of nuclear weapons as the first against the background of the creation of the AUKUS alliance.
