Meta challenged the imposition of a negotiable fine for not removing content

Meta Platforms (Facebook) challenged the imposition of a turnover fine on her in Russia. This was announced on January 18 by the Tagansky District Court of Moscow, which received a corresponding complaint.

“At the decision of the magistrate a complaint was received from a representative of Meta Platforms Inc Volodin O.I. The date of consideration of this complaint at the court session will be announced additionally,» the message says.

On December 24, a world court in Moscow fined Meta Platforms for failing to remove information banned in the Russian Federation. The size of the turnover fine amounted to almost 2 billion rubles. The court also ruled to fine Google 7.2 billion rubles for refusing to remove content. As follows from the documents of court decisions, the approved turnover fines amounted to 5% of the annual income of these companies.

Member of the Federation Council Alexei Pushkov pointed out that the court’s decision is a consequence of the constant policy of companies avoiding the implementation of the laws of the Russian Federation. Under such conditions, the introduction of turnover penalties against Meta and Google was inevitable, he stressed.

In turn, Deputy Chairman of the Council for the Development of the Digital Economy, Irina Rukavishnikova, in an interview with Izvestia, noted that the introduction of turnover fines against foreign IT giants was a necessary measure on the part of Russia. She explained that in the past, companies were given the usual fixed penalties, which remained an imperceptible loss in a multi-billion dollar revenue. As a result, IT giants continued to violate the laws of the Russian Federation.
