Twitter fined 10 million for publications about FBK and shooting at a university in Perm

Twitter was fined 10 million rubles in Russia for refusing to delete tweets mentioning the Anti-Corruption Foundation (FBK, recognized as a foreign agent and an extremist organization, its activities are prohibited in Russia) and its participants, as well as publications with an assessment of the shooting at the University of Perm. It is reported on Wednesday, January 19, TASS with reference to the court decision.

On Twitter, two protocols were drawn up under the article “Violation of the procedure for restricting access to information.” Roskomnadzor sent notifications to the company, in which it asked to remove publications with information distributed in violation of Russian laws.

“Namely, calls for participation in an unauthorized rally on September 18, 2021, information about the activities of the FBK, Alexei Navalny, Maria Pevchikh, Leonid Volkov, as well as an assessment of events at Perm State University,” the agency cites an excerpt from the document.

Within the statutory period, within 24 hours of receiving the notice, Twitter did not remove the information.

“Twitter has been found guilty on two counts of misconduct. The company was sentenced to a fine in the amount of 10 million rubles,” the document says.

At the end of November, it became known that six cases were filed against Twitter for the forced collection of 19 million rubles in fines also for refusing to remove content prohibited in the country.

On February 1, a law came into force in Russia, according to which social networks must themselves identify and block prohibited content. If they cannot independently assess the illegality of the content, the administration of the social network must send the data to Roskomnadzor within 24 hours.
