Scientists have reported the risk of obesity in the granddaughters and great-granddaughters of smoking men

Employees of the University of Bristol (UK) found a link between overweight in women and the bad habits of their male ancestors. According to a report published on Scientific Reports on January 21, the granddaughters and great-granddaughters of men who started smoking before puberty (before age 13) have an innate tendency to be obese.

In 2014, researchers from this university proved that fathers’ smoking affects abnormal weight gain in sons and does not affect daughters. According to new data, when it comes to distant descendants, women can suffer from overweight, but not men.

The specialists collected data on the health of 14 thousand people, and also studied their family history. It turned out that the body fat mass of the granddaughters and great-granddaughters of “early” smokers exceeds the norm by an average of 5 kg. Deviations were found in subjects aged 17 and 24 years.

The results of the study showed that weight gain can be caused not only by the actions of a person, but also by the lifestyle of his ancestors. In addition, this once again confirms the harmful effects of nicotine on the body, notes Gazeta.ru.

“If the findings are confirmed using additional data, this will be one of the first evidence of the impact of external factors on the next four generations,” the authors of the article say.

Against the backdrop of current information about the dangers of smoking, many states are promoting anti-tobacco policies. For example, the New Zealand authorities plan to introduce a law in 2022 to ban the sale of tobacco to future generations. State Duma deputy Sultan Khamzaev proposed to implement a similar bill in Russia for people born after 2014.
