Google may be fined 4 million rubles for not deleting prohibited information, the new protocol will be considered by the Tagansky District Court of Moscow on February 17. This was announced on Friday, January 21, in the press service of the court.
The magistrate of court district No. 422 of the Tagansky district of the capital received administrative material, which was initiated on the basis of a protocol on administrative offenses drawn up by Roskomnadzor against Google under part 2 of Art. 13.41 of the Code of Administrative Offenses (CAO RF).
“The court session is scheduled for February 17, 2022 at 10:00,” the press service noted.
On Jan. 18, Meta Platforms challenged its turnover fine in Russia after the company was fined in December for not removing banned content. The size of the turnover fine amounted to almost 2 billion rubles.
As Pavel Katkov, the owner of the KIP LegalTech law firm, noted on January 18, Meta Platforms can appeal the judicial act in higher instances, up to the Supreme Court, but this will not make practical sense.
Earlier, on January 17, Google was fined 4 million rubles for refusing to remove prohibited information.
On December 24, the court ruled to fine Google 7.2 billion rubles for refusing to remove content. According to court ruling documents, the approved turnover fines for Google and Meta amounted to 5% of the companies’ annual revenue.
On February 1, 2021, a law came into force in Russia, according to which social networks must themselves identify and block prohibited content. If it is not possible to independently assess the illegality of the content within a day, the administration of the social network must send the data to Roskomnadzor.
