Germany and Spain have started a pilot project in order to be able to use the digital ID system “e-ID” across borders in the future.
On Thursday, the Minister of State for Digitization, Dorothee Bär (CSU), and her Spanish counterpart, Carme Artigas, signed an agreement to initiate cooperation on the development of a cross-border system of digital identities.
According to the ideas of the federal government, an infrastructure should be created in Germany with which all types of evidence can be securely issued, managed and shared, whether from identity cards, driver’s licenses and Bahncard to university certificates. These should then land in a protected app on the smartphone and be conveniently presented if necessary. The Bundestag created the legal basis for this in May. The “ID Wallet” app was presented as the first pilot application, with which travelers can digitally check in to a hotel without physical contact.
With cross-border compatibility of the digital ID systems, for example, German holidaymakers abroad could spontaneously rent a rental car and share the necessary personnel and driver’s license data as well as any necessary proof of vaccination with an app in one go. Bär said that a reliable digital identity is essential for the digital sovereignty of Germany and Europe, but also of individual citizens. “People must be able to access their data themselves.” The federal government recognizes that digital identity is a fundamental building block for successful digitization.
The cooperation agreement with Spain now provides for the development and conception of a cross-border pilot project. The findings from this are to flow into the further development of the framework for digital identities of the European Union.
