Doctors told about the methods of treatment of snoring and nasal breathing disorders

The use of sparing minimally invasive techniques in the treatment of snoring and nasal breathing disorders helps to avoid redundant operations, which often lead to anatomical disorders and require long-term rehabilitation. This was reported on February 19 by the experts of the conference “Radio wave surgery in otorhinolaryngology: evolution and points of application”, which took place at the site of the International Medical Center “SOGAZ” in St. Petersburg.

During the conference, experts discussed different approaches to the surgical treatment of patients, and also performed a demonstrative operation for the treatment of nasal obstruction syndrome.

According to experts, about 30% of men and 20% of women worldwide suffer from snoring. Snoring can be a precursor to obstructive sleep apnea (OSAS), which occurs when breathing stops for more than 10 seconds, causing a person to receive less oxygen during sleep and is at increased risk of developing cardiovascular disease and other pathologies.

One of the popular treatments for snoring is laser uvuloplasty, an operation to remove the uvula and part of the tissues of the soft palate. However, according to experts, this method of treatment can cause negative consequences and worsen the quality of life of patients.

Leading otorhinolaryngologist of the SOGAZ MEDICINE Group of Companies, head of the department of otorhinolaryngology with the clinic of the St. Petersburg State Medical University. acad. I.P. Pavlov Sergey Karpishchenko explained that with a radical excision of the soft palate, it will cease to perform a separating function, as a result of which food will begin to enter the nasopharynx.

“Some doctors perform a kind of “sparing” operation – they cut off the uvula of the soft palate. But it is designed to moisturize the back wall of the pharynx, so after cutting it off, a person is faced with a constant pronounced dryness of the pharynx. Often such patients often also suffer from reflux disease, and the defenseless mucous membrane is also exposed to the irritating effect of acid from the stomach, ”he said.

Experts noted that less traumatic tools can now be used.

Thus, within the framework of the conference, specialists from the SOGAZ International Medical Center spoke about radio wave techniques, which are a safe alternative to radical laser operations.

“Our priority is to achieve results with minimal tissue trauma. If we talk about the excision of the soft palate to eliminate snoring and sleep apnea, then it is radio wave surgery that allows you to perform a sparing, organ-preserving operation without causing scarring, which means reducing the rehabilitation period and reducing pain in the patient,” said the leading operating otorhinolaryngologist International Medical Center Alexei Aksenov.

As the head of the department of otorhinolaryngology of the International Medical Center, Ph.D. Olga Plotkina, the use of radio wave surgery allows for a number of interventions on an outpatient basis, that is, without hospitalization, disability and long-term recovery.
