RKN demanded to return access to YouTube channels of the Russian media in Ukraine

Roskomnadzor sent a letter to the management of the American company Google LLC demanding to remove all restrictions imposed on the YouTube channels of Russian media in Ukraine. This was announced on February 27 by the press service of the department.

“Roskomnadzor sent a letter to the management of the American company Google LLC with a demand to remove all restrictions imposed on the Russian-language YouTube channels of Russian media: RBC, Zvezda and Sputnik as soon as possible, and also to explain the reasons for their introduction,” the report says. .

As noted in Roskomnadzor, earlier from the editorial offices of these publications, the department received “information about the restriction by the administration of the YouTube video hosting of access to Russian-language channels of Russian media on the territory of Ukraine.”

“American Internet services, including YouTube video hosting, are participating in the information confrontation, purposefully limiting Russian media, including those that are official Russian sources of information,” the department said.

In a letter from Roskomnadzor to the YouTube administration, it is emphasized that such actions violate the key principles of the free distribution of information and unhindered access to it by citizens.

Earlier in the day, it was reported that Google had temporarily suspended the monetization of Russian state media. In addition, according to YouTube spokesman Farshad Shadlou, following a request from the Ukrainian government, RT and a number of other channels will no longer be available in Ukraine.

The day before, the Minister of Digital Transformation of Ukraine, Mikhail Fedorov, said that he had contacted YouTube “to block Russian propaganda channels such as Russia 24, TASS, RIA Novosti.”

On February 24, Russian President Vladimir Putin announced an operation to protect the civilian population of Donbass. After that, the Ukrainian leader Volodymyr Zelensky accused Russia of hitting the country’s military infrastructure and introduced martial law throughout Ukraine. He also said that Kyiv is breaking off diplomatic relations with Moscow and withdrawing its diplomats from the embassy.

The Russian Defense Ministry stressed that the army did not carry out air, missile or artillery strikes on the cities of Ukraine. The civilian population of the country is not in danger. High-precision weapons destroy military infrastructure.

On February 21, the heads of the Donetsk and Luhansk People’s Republics (DPR and LPR), Denis Pushilin and Leonid Pasechnik, asked Putin to recognize the independence of the republics. The corresponding decrees were signed in the evening of the same day. In the presence of the leaders of the republics, the President of the Russian Federation also signed treaties of friendship, cooperation and assistance.

The situation in Donbass escalated on February 17, 2022. The DPR and LPR reported heavy shelling by Ukrainian security forces, including from heavy weapons. The republics announced a general mobilization and evacuation of civilians to the territory of Russia.

Since 2014, the Ukrainian authorities have been conducting a military operation against the inhabitants of Donbass, who refused to recognize the results of the coup d’état and the new government in Ukraine. At the same time, Kyiv blames Moscow for the current situation. Russia has repeatedly stated that it is not a party to the conflict.
