On the one hand great confidence, on the other hand great uncertainty: The current situation remains “fragile”, as the Bitkom president explained.
After the Corona year, the German digital industry is looking to the future with greater confidence than ever before. The Bitkom-ifo digital index reached a maximum value of 40.5 points, as the industry association Bitkom announced on Thursday.
At the same time, there are also considerable uncertainties, said Bitkom President Achim Berg. “The appearance of new Corona variants, a possible fourth wave, the uncertain outcome of the federal election in autumn and the ongoing shortage of semiconductors make the current situation fragile and it remains economically exciting.”
The digital industry is developing dynamically. For this year, Bitkom expects sales in the IT, telecommunications and entertainment electronics sectors to increase by 4 percent to 178.2 billion euros.
According to Bitkom figures, 61 percent of employees in the industry still work wholly or partially in the home office – and a good half want it to stay that way after the pandemic. The number of jobs in the I industry will increase this year by 3.5 percent to 1.27 million – and will exceed the threshold of 1.3 million in 2022.
