V15 Detect – this Dyson hunts dust with a laser

V15 Detect – this Dyson hunts dust with a laser

Dyson’s new flagship scores with two innovations. A laser measures the particle density and the rotary brushes are built in such a way that they finally stop winding hair. That’s awesome – but, as always at Dyson, not cheap.

Dyson vacuum cleaners can claim to be the measure of all things cordless vacuum cleaners. This is how the relatively steep prices are justified. In the past, most cordless vacuum cleaners only kindled a mild breeze, and anyone who tried five or seven years ago to use such a device to get the dust out of car velor can tell you a thing or two about it. When it comes to vacuuming, most devices have made significant improvements today. A signal for the top dog Dyson to continue improving his equipment.

Dyson believes that customers who spend a lot of money on a vacuum cleaner also expect the device to clean exceptionally well. And so that they also know how clean it is, the built in a dust detection system. A laser measures the amount and size of the particles in the flow of air that is sucked in. The small LCD display on the suction gun shows the respective quantity of four size classes. Is that just a gimmick? No, it calms the mind of the houseworker when he sees what he can do with his Dyson. Apart from the psychomassage during housework, these values also control the automatic mode of the device. The engine then starts up depending on the degree of pollution. The automatic is definitely recommended, it provides suction power when you need it and conserves the battery whenever possible. If you only work in boost mode, you not only vacuum the floor, but above all the power storage unit quickly.

In auto mode, the battery lasts longer than half an hour – longer on smooth floors. If the Dyson is only let loose on exhausting, shaggy carpets, less. That doesn’t sound like that long at first – but is sufficient for several rooms. Problems are only encountered if you want to vacuum a house from the basement to the attic in one fell swoop. And should switch to the “Complete Extra” edition with two batteries.

Two practical innovations

The dirt detection is definitely useful. The new rotary brushes with “anti-hair entanglement technology” are almost even better. What is that supposed to mean? In order to be able to pick up dust properly, cordless vacuum cleaners and robot vacuum cleaners all work with a brush in the floor suction head that is set in rotation by a motor. The dust is brushed up, whirled up and then vacuumed. The problem with this: Longer fibers – mostly hair – wrap around the brush core. The longer the hair is in the apartment, the more it will get stuck in the brush. Because it always rotates, the hair is pulled tighter and tighter and binds together to form real threads.

The result: the whole brush always looks unkempt – that affects the mood of fussy hearts. To do this, the hair must be removed regularly. Usually you have to cut it from the plastic core with a small pair of scissors or a carpet knife and then pluck it off. In addition, other fibers tend to collect in the brushes, which have to be plucked off in a laborious manner. It’s always a dusty and a little disgusting business.

There was no shortage of long human and dog hair in the test household, so the problem is well known. In fact, the new Dyson technique works flawlessly. Both the smaller, conical and the large rotary brush. Instead of whole bundles, there are only a few hairs. That’s a big improvement. Nobody likes to manually pluck their hair, for asthmatics and people with dust allergies it should be pure torture.

Dyson is the pioneer in bagless vacuuming and has experience in emptying the dust container. You just have to hold the device over the garbage can, pull the switch and the house dust disappears – the contact is minimal. Like the previous devices, the fivefold filtering so that the dust that has been sucked in remains in the vacuum cleaner.

The look of the Dyson teats with their colorful decorative elements is a matter of taste. There is nothing to complain about about the suction power, if necessary the vacuum cleaner goes up to 240 watts. Except for special applications such as a workshop vacuum cleaner, the V15 certainly does not vacuum worse than a good corded device. Or significantly better than many cable devices. The Dyson can be used as a long style floor vacuum. If the pipe is removed, the device is much more handy and can also be used in cupboards or in the car. When working hands-free, however, the weight is noticeable; the device leans on the floor with a long style.

How many accessories do you use?

Depending on the version, the with loads of accessories. The parts are all practical and well thought out. Here you have to know what kind of user you are. If you only use the floor brush and a small upholstery nozzle, that’s a lot of accessories. If you make it a point to use the right attachment for every task, you will have a lot of fun with a lot of accessories. Accessories, plastics and switches are valuable and have a long service life – a clearly noticeable difference to cheaper vacuum cleaners.

verdict

The Dyson comes very close to the ideal of a cordless vacuum cleaner. In combination with a vacuum robot, you definitely don’t need a cable device in the household. The price remains. The Dyson V15 Detect Absolute costs 699 euros – there are two floor nozzles, seven accessories and a battery. The “Complete Extra” has two batteries and eleven accessories – but then the package also costs 829 euros. The second battery is not necessarily required for private use in the household. But it brings more comfort: Then you can always switch to a fully charged battery.

The price is justified if you can afford it. The difference to a cheap device is noticeable on every level. If money is tight, you can of course do without such a high-end vacuum cleaner, because vacuum cleaners are also much cheaper. The Eufy S11 Go also did quite well in the test. It only costs around 200 euros – but neither in terms of feel nor suction power, it comes close to the Dyson V15 Detect.
