The Spotify audio streaming service opened a representative office in the Russian Federation in pursuance of the law on the activities of foreign persons on the Internet in Russia. This is stated in a message published on February 4 on the website of Roskomnadzor.
“Create a branch, or open a representative office, or establish a Russian legal entity. Achieved,” the statement said.
The Law on the Activities of Foreign Persons on the Internet on the Territory of Russia was adopted last summer and came into force on January 1. In accordance with the legislation of the Russian Federation, foreign Internet companies with a daily audience of more than 500,000 users must open their authorized representative offices in Russia. The list includes Google, Apple, Meta Platforms, Twitter, TikTok, Telegram and others.
Earlier in the day, it became known that Apple opened a branch, representative office or legal entity in Russia, the first to comply with the requirements of the Landing Law. Prior to that, on January 14, Apple, within the framework of this law, also registered a personal account on the Roskomnadzor website.
In May 2021, the Safe Internet League supported the initiative of the State Duma. Alexander Zhuravlev, Chairman of the Commission for Legal Support of the Digital Economy of the Moscow Branch of the Russian Bar Association, noted that global technology giants such as Facebook, Twitter, Amazon and others “actively take advantage” of the fact that their head offices are outside Russian jurisdiction.
