Scientists have found a way to predict the formation of blood clots with Omicron

Specialists of the Moscow Research Institute named after G.N. Gabrichevsky Rospotrebnadzor developed a system for assessing the risk of developing cardiovascular complications in coronavirus. It allows you to establish the beginning of the formation of a blood clot in real time, and begin therapy – before it forms and becomes life-threatening.

As Tatyana Ruzhentsova, deputy director for clinical work of the Gabrichevsky Institute, Doctor of Medical Sciences, told Izvestia, the method is based on determining the level of endothelin-1, a vasoconstrictor substance that is released in response to damage to the vessel wall by a virus and causes its narrowing.

“In this area, conditions are created for the formation of a blood clot. The more such areas the patient has, the more pronounced blood flow disorders in the body. With the help of methods generally accepted today, we will see all the changes later – when blood clots are already formed, the heart and other organs suffered from a lack of blood flow and oxygen. And the level of endothelin-1 makes it possible to see the stage preceding all these processes,” the expert explained.

The higher the value of this indicator, the higher the risk of developing cardiovascular complications, which was confirmed by observations of patients, added Tatyana Ruzhentsova.

If antithrombotic and other necessary cardiovascular therapy is started on time, vasospasms and thrombus formation can be stopped, preventing heart attacks, strokes, thromboembolism and other terrible complications.

Studies have shown that the main factor in the development of cardiovascular complications was the peculiarity of SARS-CoV-2 itself, which can interact with the ACE-2 receptor (the main “entrance gate” for the virus) located in the vessel wall. Therefore, the degree of risk depends primarily on the number of these receptors, the amount of the virus that has entered the body and the activity of its reproduction, a junior researcher at the clinical department of the Institute named after Izvestiya told Izvestiya. G.N. Gabrichevsky Daria Khavkina.

“All known strains of SARS-CoV-2 have the ability to cause vascular damage. So far, we have not seen significant differences in this action. To date, too little time has passed to evaluate the capabilities of the new variant, the Omicron. But preliminary data on severe weakness in patients, headaches, rashes, indicate a high probability of vascular disorders, ”she emphasized.

This issue remains to be investigated, but it can already be said that the risk assessment method using endothelin-1 will be effective regardless of the strain of the virus. With a simple blood test from a vein, specialists will be able to understand within one day whether a patient is prone to thrombosis, the institute explained.
