Russia plans to introduce a tax to support patriotic games

In Russia, the government plans to impose a tax on Steam, PlayStation Store, Epic Games Store and other platforms to support patriotic video games. It is reported by “Kommersant” with reference to sources in the Cabinet on Wednesday, February 16.

A source in the government told the newspaper that the Ministry of Digital Development proposed to create a fund to support patriotic games, which would be replenished by an additional tax on overseas distribution sites. The interlocutors of the publication noted that gaming platforms may be required to transfer 5% of the turnover in Russia to the budget, which will provide the fund with 10 billion rubles a year.

A report with a proposal to create a fund has already been sent to the government.

The interlocutors of the publication reported that the authorities are preparing other initiatives to stimulate the Russian gaming market, such as preferential taxation, for local developers.

In December, Izvestia, citing App Anie, wrote that smartphone users spent more than $90 billion on mobile games in 2021. The volume of the Russian market, according to the forecasts of domestic developers and publishers, will reach 73.8 billion rubles.
